How to Go to a Particular Scripture in the Bible

BIBLE SEARCH HELP

How To Best Utilize This Bible Search Engine

Please note that this is not a TOPICAL search engine, but a WORD search engine. That means that you will only be able to locate scripture by using the exact word (and spelling) that is in the verse that you are searching for. For example, this search engine will not search for a concept (like "worry") unless that is a word specifically used in the Bible. Bear in mind that there are some words and phrases commonly used in the church that are not actually in the Bible, such as "trinity" and "rapture." Therefore, if you entered one of these words into the search engine it would come up blank. It doesn't mean that the search engine does not work. It is merely programmed to search through all the words that are in the actual text of the Bible. There may be many verses that deal with the concept of worry, but some of them may not actually use that word in them. You will have to be creative and try other words that are closely related such as, "anxious" and "fearful," as well as search for opposite words like: "faith," "confidence," "trust" etc.

Running a Search in the KJV

Also bear in mind that if you are searching in the King James version of the Bible, the spellings of certain words will often be dramatically different than today's spelling. For instance, the word "example" is spelled "ensample" in the KJV. "Diverse" is spelled "divers." If you are looking for a verse with the word "strengthens" in it, you will have to run a search for, "strengtheneth.". There are many such spelling and grammar discrepancies.

Also the KJV uses different words than our modern English does. If you are looking for "love" in the KJV, you should also run a search for the word "charity" as it will bring up many more verses. If you are searching for "patience" you may also want to run a search for "longsuffering" and so forth.

Search Small

It is best to start with the smallest word group pertaining to a verse that you think may be unique to that verse. For instance, if you are running a search for the Lord's prayer, you might want to try searching for the phrase, "our daily bread" rather than a generic phrase like "our Father" as that will bring up many more references that you will have to weed through.

If you are searching for a phrase that you cannot locate, try searching by different words and phrases. Don't give up if you can't find the verse after one or two searches.

If you are more familiar with a different translation such as the NIV, bear in mind that we also have access to the NIV Bible online from our site. Please go to the "Read the Bible" page and click on an alternate translation. You will find that many of these linked Bibles come equipped with their own search engine.

Thank you very much and may your study and searching of the Bible bear much fruit for you!
